About Brisbane State

Brisbane State High School was founded in 1913 and evolved into Queensland’s first academic state secondary school, shaping generations of students in the heart of South Brisbane. What began as a small co educational institution operating from the old Normal School gradually expanded through the early decades of the twentieth century before settling permanently beside Musgrave Park in 1925. The development of the landmark red brick building in the 1920s gave the campus its enduring character and marked the beginning of its long association with the city’s academic and cultural life.

As enrolments grew, the school broadened its curriculum and facilities, adding specialised science laboratories, arts spaces, sports complexes and dedicated teaching buildings across two main campuses. Heritage structures such as H Block sit alongside contemporary developments, including significant upgrades to performing arts, technology and learning areas. The school now educates more than three thousand students across Years 7 to 12 and reflects the diversity and scale of modern Brisbane.

Brisbane State High is known for its strong academic standards and for attracting students through a combination of local intake and selective entry. A wide curriculum supports high achievement in sciences, humanities, languages and creative subjects, and student progress is reinforced by structured pastoral care systems and a broad range of enrichment opportunities. In recent years the school has gained national attention for outstanding senior results and a consistently high proportion of students achieving top university entrance scores.

The co curricular life of the school is extensive. Music, dance, drama and visual arts are well established, supported by multiple orchestras, bands, choirs and annual productions that involve large numbers of students. Debating and public speaking have a long tradition of success, while numerous clubs allow students to explore interests beyond the classroom.

Sport is central to Brisbane State High’s identity. The school is a longstanding member of both the Great Public Schools Association of Queensland and the Queensland Girls Secondary Schools Sports Association, competing across rugby, rowing, cricket, football, swimming, athletics, basketball and many other disciplines. Generations of students have trained across the main campus facilities, the West End rowing sheds and the Fursden Road playing fields, which together support one of the largest state school sporting programmes in Australia.

A strong community surrounds the school through its Past Students Association, museum collections and longstanding traditions that connect current students with more than a century of history. Today Brisbane State High School stands as one of Queensland’s most prominent public secondary schools, recognised for its scale, academic ambition, sporting depth and contribution to the educational landscape of Brisbane.
