About Whitgift School

Whitgift School is an independent day and boarding school for boys in South Croydon, founded in 1596 by Archbishop John Whitgift as part of the Whitgift Foundation. Originally created to educate the children of local communities, the school evolved through centuries of expansion and in 1931 moved to its current 45-acre estate at Haling Park, once home to the Lord High Admiral who led the fleet against the Spanish Armada. The campus blends historic buildings with modern facilities including a performing arts centre, specialist science and design spaces, an extensive sports complex, landscaped gardens and the school’s distinctive aviary and wildlife enclosures. Whitgift combines academic depth with a broad co-curricular programme. Sixth Form pupils may pursue either A-levels or the International Baccalaureate, supported by strong arts, music and science departments. The school is known for high-performance sport across rugby, hockey, cricket, golf and swimming, and maintains an active Combined Cadet Force in partnership with local state schools. Alumni include leading sportsmen, senior military figures, academics, creatives and public servants, reflecting the school’s long heritage as one of London’s most prominent boys’ schools.
