About Terenure

Terenure College is a leading Carmelite secondary school located in Terenure, Dublin. Founded in 1860, the school has grown from a small Georgian house into one of Ireland’s most recognised academic and sporting institutions. It caters for boys aged 12 to 18 and currently has more than 700 students.

The campus sits on historic grounds once owned by the Shaw family and features a lake, extensive green space, and modern academic and sports facilities including a swimming pool, theatre, and dedicated rugby and GAA pitches. The school colours are purple, white, and black, and its motto is Zelo Zelatus Sum Pro Domino Deo Exercituum (“I am filled with zeal for God, the King of all Hosts”).

Terenure College is widely known for its rugby tradition. It is one of the major Leinster Schools Senior Cup competitors with ten titles, and its graduates have represented Ireland, the Lions, and top professional clubs. The school is also active in Gaelic games, swimming, cricket, athletics, tennis, golf, and badminton. Its associated club, Terenure College RFC, plays at senior national level.

Beyond sport, the school maintains a strong reputation in drama, debating, science, and technology. Students have excelled at the Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition, including an overall national winner in 2017. Cultural activities such as Model United Nations, Amnesty International, and Young Toastmasters add to the school’s co-curricular life.

Terenure’s alumni include prominent figures in Irish sport, politics, media, literature, and the arts. The Past Pupils Union continues to support the school through events, scholarships, and community initiatives.

With a long history, strong academic standards, and a vibrant school culture, Terenure College remains a significant institution in Irish education.
