Tauranga Boys’ College was established in 1958 after the original Tauranga College was split into separate boys’ and girls’ schools to ease overcrowding. The school sits on the historic Hillsdene site, first planned in the 1930s but delayed by wartime. Since its opening it has become one of the largest boys’ schools in the Bay of Plenty, combining academic ambition with a strong sense of tradition. Honours boards, memorial trees and buildings named after former principals reflect a culture that values both heritage and achievement.
The school serves more than two thousand students from Year 9 to Year 13 and is known for high academic performance, including consistently strong scholarship results. The campus includes extensive sports fields, specialist facilities and a modern learning environment that supports a broad curriculum. Its house system celebrates prominent New Zealanders, reinforcing values of service, leadership and national identity.
Tauranga Boys’ has a rich sporting pedigree across rugby, football, hockey, volleyball, water polo, rowing and sailing. The College fields competitive First Teams in multiple codes and has produced All Blacks, Olympians and world class athletes, including Mahé Drysdale, Sam Cane and Kane Williamson. In recent years the school has added national titles in several sports, strengthening its position as a leading force in New Zealand secondary school sport while maintaining a balanced focus on academics, culture and character development.
