St Patrick’s College, Strathfield is a Catholic boys’ school in Sydney’s Inner West, founded in 1928 by the Christian Brothers and now operated within the Edmund Rice Education Australia network. The college educates around 1450 students from Years 5 to 12 and remains known for its academic standards, co-curricular breadth and a strong religious identity shaped by the charism of Edmund Rice. Its motto, Luceat Lux Vestra (“Let Your Light Shine”), underpins the school’s expectations for learning, leadership and service.
The college was originally established as the St Patrick’s Practice School to support teacher training at the neighbouring Mount St Mary campus of the Australian Catholic University. As enrolments grew, St Patrick’s expanded into a full secondary school and developed specialised facilities in science, arts, technology and sport. A shift toward lay leadership began in the 1990s, reflecting broader changes across Edmund Rice schools, and today the college is led by Dr Vittoria Lavorato.
The school operates a six-house system, with each house named after figures who shaped the early development of the college, including founders, principals and long-standing Brothers. The house system drives participation in academic, cultural and sporting activities through the College Cup, which recognises effort, school spirit and achievement across the year.
St Patrick’s offers a broad co-curricular programme that includes drama, musical productions with sister school Santa Sabina College, debating, music ensembles, public speaking, outdoor education and a variety of academic clubs. Annual cultural events such as the college musical and drama production form a central part of school life.
Sport is a major focus at St Patrick’s. The college competes in the Independent Sporting Association competitions, fielding teams across rugby union, cricket, football, athletics, swimming and other sports. The First XV plays in the ISA rugby competition, and the wider programme is supported by the college’s long-standing community club, St Patrick’s Rugby Club, which competes in the NSW Suburban Rugby Union. The club has won multiple premierships and has never been relegated from the Kentwell Cup First Division since entering in 1974.
St Patrick’s has educated a wide range of students who have gone on to make an impact in sport, public life, the arts and professional fields. The St Patrick’s College Old Boys Association supports ongoing connection with alumni networks, sporting clubs and community initiatives.
With a long history, a large student body and a comprehensive academic and co-curricular offering, St Patrick’s College remains one of Sydney’s established Edmund Rice schools.
