Saint Ignatius’ College, Riverview is one of Australia’s most prominent Jesuit boys’ schools, located on the Lane Cove River on Sydney’s Lower North Shore. Founded in 1880 by Joseph Dalton SJ, the school forms part of the global Jesuit education network and operates with a strong emphasis on character, service, and academic breadth. It enrols around 1,560 boys from Years 5–12, including 335 boarders, making it one of the country’s largest and most influential boarding programs.
The Riverview campus is spread across elevated grounds overlooking the river, featuring historic sandstone buildings, the Dalton Memorial Chapel, and a rare on-campus observatory founded by Jesuit astronomer Edward Francis Pigot in 1909. The school motto — Quantum Potes Tantum Aude (“As much as you can do, so much dare to do”) — shapes the college’s culture of ambition, resilience, and service.
A founding member of the AAGPS (Athletic Association of the Great Public Schools), Riverview is deeply embedded in Sydney’s elite school sporting landscape. Rugby union has been the signature winter sport since 1892, producing 17 Wallabies and maintaining one of the most passionately supported 1st XV environments in the country — centred around the wide royal-blue–and-white striped jersey and longstanding crowd “War Cries.”
The college also has a powerful rowing tradition. Riverview took to the water in 1882 and runs the Riverview Gold Cup, one of Australia’s oldest continuous regattas. Its boatshed and pontoon sit uniquely on the school grounds — the only Sydney school with an on-campus setup on the Lane Cove River. Alumni include Olympic medallist Daniel Noonan.
Beyond rugby and rowing, Riverview has leading programs in basketball, AFL, tennis, cross country, cricket, athletics, water polo and more. The basketball program is nationally prominent, with a 2019 AAGPS title, multiple Raschke Cups and a National Championship.
Academically, Riverview blends Jesuit pedagogy with a broad curriculum and major co-curricular offerings in debating, public speaking, performing arts, digital media and service initiatives. The debating program is one of the most decorated in the GPS, with 35 1sts Premierships, 22 Lawrence Campbell Oratory winners, and numerous national representatives.
The school operates a sixteen-House pastoral system built on the Jesuit principle of Cura Personalis — care for the individual — with mixed-age mentor groups and strong academic guidance. Its boarders are divided between three houses spanning Years 6–12, maintaining long-standing traditions and tight-knit community culture.
Notable alumni (“Old Ignatians”) include former Prime Minister Tony Abbott, Deputy PM Barnaby Joyce, art critic Robert Hughes, playwright Nick Enright, poet Christopher Brennan, Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP, Olympians, Wallabies, Rhodes Scholars, and Australia’s first astronaut, Paul Scully-Power.
With its combination of Jesuit identity, strong boarding culture, GPS heritage, elite sport, and extensive community footprint, Riverview is regarded as one of the cornerstone institutions in Australian boys’ education.
