About RGS, High Wycombe

Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe is one of England’s oldest boys’ grammar schools, founded in the mid-sixteenth century and established by Royal Charter in 1562. Set on Amersham Hill, the school combines selective academic standards with a large modern campus, boarding facilities, and a strong co-curricular culture. RGS draws from across Buckinghamshire and neighbouring counties, offering places to boys who qualify through the eleven-plus, with an additional pathway for boarders through the Fraser Youens House.

Academically, the school maintains a sustained reputation for high attainment, particularly in mathematics, science, modern languages, and humanities. The sixth form attracts applicants from across the region, supported by a broad A-level portfolio and strong progression routes to top universities, including Oxbridge and Russell Group institutions. The school’s language specialism and long-standing computing focus have shaped its academic identity, reinforced by a purpose-built languages centre and a well-resourced IT environment.

Sport is central to school life. RGS has produced international athletes across rugby, cricket, hockey, rowing, and athletics, with notable alumni such as Luke Donald, Matt Dawson, Nick Beal, and Jon Wyatt. Rugby remains the flagship programme, with close community ties through High Wycombe RFC, originally founded by former pupils. Hockey, football, fencing, and shooting also form part of a wide sporting offering, supported by two main playing fields, indoor facilities, and a modern 3G pitch completed in 2016. The rowing programme operates from Longridge on the Thames and has achieved national junior titles.

The school’s co-curricular environment is extensive, including drama, orchestras, choirs, debating, a Combined Cadet Force, and a long-running tradition of stage production and technical theatre. Music has achieved national recognition, including a National Youth Choir of the Year award. The campus combines historic teaching blocks with modern additions such as the music centre and refurbished sixth form spaces.

RGS alumni, known as Old Wycombiensians, maintain an active association and include figures from politics, academia, the arts, and professional sport. The school’s blend of tradition, academic ambition, and large-scale extracurricular opportunities gives it one of the strongest identities among England’s state grammar schools.
