Pretoria Boys High School is a large public English-medium high school for boys located in Brooklyn, Pretoria. Founded in 1901 during the Milner era, the school grew from its origins in central Pretoria to its landmark red-brick campus on Waterkloof Hill, completed in 1909 and now recognised as a provincial heritage site. The school shares deep historical links with Pretoria High School for Girls and remains one of South Africa’s most recognisable boys’ schools.
The campus spans more than forty hectares across two sites, with academic buildings, boarding houses, fields, courts and natural spaces forming a distinctive environment inside the city. Facilities include a modern media centre, science laboratories, a music centre, extensive sports grounds, two swimming pools and cultural venues for drama, art and ensembles. The school maintains the traditions of a large boarding institution, with three boarding houses and seven day-boy houses forming the foundation of student life.
Academically the school delivers the full South African curriculum with a strong emphasis on science, mathematics, music and the humanities. Cultural life is broad, with established programmes in music, debating, public speaking, theatre, photography and a wide range of student societies. The music department supports orchestras, choirs and ensembles that perform regularly in Pretoria and beyond.
Sport plays a significant role in the identity of Pretoria Boys High School. The school fields large teams across rugby, cricket, hockey, athletics, rowing, swimming, tennis and other codes, supported by professional coaching and long-standing rivalries. The rugby programme is well known in Gauteng and has produced several national players and coaches alongside a long line of provincial representatives.
The grounds also include recreational areas such as an artificial lake, wooded walks and former shooting ranges adapted for archery and outdoor activities. Pupils take part in inter-house events throughout the year, with the annual swimming gala and athletics meeting among the most prominent.
Pretoria Boys High School has one of the largest alumni networks in the country. Old Boys have contributed across science, business, sport, politics and the arts, including Nobel Prize laureates, Rhodes Scholars, international athletes and globally recognised figures. The Old Boys Association maintains active ties with the school through events, reunions and publications.
