About Potch Boys

Potchefstroom High School for Boys is one of South Africa’s historic English-medium boys’ schools, founded in 1905 during the Milner era as part of a broader push to establish structured education in the Transvaal. Set on a heritage campus with strong Cape Dutch architectural influence, the school retains a traditional boarding-school character, supported by three long-established boarding houses and a day-boy house that anchors the broader student community.

Academically, the school follows a focused English curriculum with a strong emphasis on discipline, structure and personal development. Cultural programmes include drama, debating and public speaking, which run throughout the year and remain closely tied to staff involvement and student leadership. The school newspaper, The Mooi, provides an ongoing record of activity and student life.

Sport has always been central to the identity of Boys High. All students participate in at least one code per season, contributing to a long track record of provincial and national representation. Rugby, cricket, hockey, tennis and swimming are the core sports, with traditional fixtures against Pretoria Boys High, King Edward VII, Jeppe, Parktown Boys and St Stithians forming some of the school’s most anticipated annual events. Rugby in particular carries significant heritage, supported by the early connection to the first Springbok tour and the symbolic springbok horns preserved in the school museum.

The alumni network, known as the Old Boys or Old Mooi, plays an active role in school life and maintains close ties with the governing body and reunions. Former pupils have gone on to excel across sport, business, public service and the arts, reflecting a broad influence that extends well beyond Potchefstroom.
