Oundle School is a large co-educational boarding and day school situated in the market town of Oundle in Northamptonshire. Founded in 1556 by the Worshipful Company of Grocers, the school has developed into one of the major independent schools in Britain, known for strong academics, extensive facilities and a longstanding culture of boarding. The campus is woven through the centre of the town, with historic stone buildings and modern teaching centres forming a distinctive school environment.
Academically the school offers a broad curriculum and consistently achieves strong GCSE and A-Level results. Oundle retains a clear academic focus rooted in science, engineering and modern languages, shaped historically by the reforms of headmaster F. W. Sanderson in the early twentieth century. The school supports this academic tradition through specialist facilities such as the SciTec complex, the Patrick Engineering Centre and the Cripps Library.
Boarding is central to school life. With more than eight hundred boarders and additional day pupils, the house system underpins the school community and provides a structured environment for academic work, pastoral care and co-curricular involvement. Pupils take part in a wide range of clubs and societies, including debating, music, drama and community service.
Sport plays a major role in the school’s identity. Oundle competes nationally across rugby, hockey, cricket and rowing, with well-resourced coaching and facilities. The school produces competitive teams in boys’ rugby, girls’ hockey and cricket, and maintains strong touring traditions. Sport is complemented by a large Combined Cadet Force, community action programmes and a long-running Mencap holiday for young people with learning disabilities.
The school places importance on chapel life and maintains its Church of England heritage, with regular services for boarders and major school events held in the Chapel of Saint Anthony. The cultural life of the school includes a wide range of musical groups, theatre productions at the Stahl Theatre and regular exhibitions in the Yarrow Gallery.
Oundle’s alumni, known as Old Oundelians, include figures in science, architecture, politics, the military and sport. Notable former pupils range from Richard Dawkins and Bruce Dickinson to international athletes and senior judges. The OO community maintains a strong connection to the school through the OO Club, founded in 1883.
