Northwood School is one of KwaZulu-Natal’s major all-boys public high schools and a recognised sporting institution within Durban North. Formed in 1990 through the merger of Northlands Boys’ High and Beachwood Boys’ High, the school today serves more than 1,300 pupils and operates on a large urban campus with extensive academic and athletic facilities. Its identity is tied to the long histories of both predecessor schools, which shaped a strong community culture and a broad alumni network across Durban and beyond.
The school delivers the full CAPS curriculum with English as the primary language of teaching and learning. Pupils choose between Afrikaans and Zulu as additional languages and have access to a wide academic offering that includes the sciences, commerce, technical subjects, graphic design and tourism. Northwood’s academic programme is supported by a large staff, modern specialist rooms and structured pastoral systems designed to prepare boys for university or technical pathways after matric.
Sport is central to school life. Northwood has a significant footprint in KwaZulu-Natal across rugby, cricket, hockey, football, basketball and athletics. The rugby programme is competitive at provincial level and has produced players who advanced to professional and international careers. The campus hosts multiple fields, indoor and outdoor courts, a swimming facility, conditioning areas and dedicated spaces for specialist sports such as rock climbing. Fixtures against Westville Boys’, Glenwood and other Durban rivals form a key part of the school’s sporting calendar.
Cultural activity is broad, with opportunities in music, visual arts, leadership groups and community outreach programmes. The school’s scale allows it to offer clubs and societies across academic, creative and service disciplines, aligned with its aim to develop well-rounded pupils. Northwood’s ethos is built around discipline, structure and a clear school identity symbolised by the Knight, which reflects the values of responsibility, loyalty and self-belief.
The Northwood Old Boys community includes figures from South African sport, public life and the creative industries. The school continues to maintain a prominent role within Durban North, positioned as a large, diverse, multi-faceted boys’ school with a strong competitive presence in the province’s academic and sporting landscape.
