Northampton School for Boys
An Independent Academy for the Town and County
Est. 1541
Northampton School for Boys is one of England’s oldest boys’ schools and a major state-sector sports institution. Founded in 1541 and based on Billing Road since 1911, the school combines a long civic history with the scale, academic ambition and cultural programme of a large modern academy. Years 7 to 11 are boys-only and the sixth form is mixed, giving the senior years a broader academic and social environment that attracts strong applications from across Northamptonshire.
Academically, NSB is one of the highest-performing non-selective boys’ schools in the region. Its curriculum is built around traditional academic strengths in English, mathematics, science and languages, supported by specialist departments in expressive arts, technology and humanities. The school’s track record in university progression, especially to Russell Group institutions, is consistently strong. Music sits at the heart of the school identity, with ensembles and jazz groups that have earned national recognition at the Music for Youth finals and performed at major venues including the Royal Albert Hall.
Sport is a defining part of NSB’s reputation. The school competes at a high level across rugby, football, cricket, rowing, basketball, athletics and cross country. Its rugby pathway is one of the most productive in the state sector, regularly feeding into the Northampton Saints academy and producing professional and international players across multiple generations. Saturday fixtures remain a core part of school culture. The wider programme includes strong football age groups, with national schools titles at under 13 and under 15 level, and a rowing club that competes actively on the Thames and at domestic regattas.
The campus blends heritage buildings with extensive modern facilities. These include the Cripps Hall arts complex, a dedicated performance theatre and specialist spaces for drama and modern languages. Major investment over the past two decades has added new teaching blocks, ICT suites, sixth form spaces, a large concourse and the Edward Cripps Human Performance Centre, which includes a modern swimming pool with adjustable depth, a dance studio and upgraded conditioning areas.
Admissions are highly competitive. At Year 7, places are allocated through a combination of sibling links, aptitude assessments in music and technology, and a fair allocation system designed to balance academic bands. The mixed sixth form draws around sixty external students each year, selected through testing and interview. The school’s large Old Northamptonians community remains closely connected through sport, alumni events and longstanding links with Northampton Saints.
Northampton School for Boys today is a large, academically focused, sport-driven school with a distinct identity rooted in tradition and high standards. Its combination of state-school accessibility, elite-level pathways and a strong cultural offering has made it one of the most recognised boys’ schools in the country.
