Napier Boys’ High School was founded in 1872 and is one of New Zealand’s oldest boys’ schools. Originally based on Bluff Hill and briefly amalgamated with Napier Girls’ High School, it later relocated to its current Te Awa campus in 1927 to allow for expansion. The school developed a strong academic and sporting culture under influential leaders like William Allan Armour, who helped shape its early reputation and oversaw the construction of key campus buildings.
Today the school serves more than a thousand students from Year 9 to Year 13, supported by a large staff and an extensive co curricular structure. The 30 hectare campus includes rugby and football fields, cricket facilities, a gym complex, a swimming pool and the Hawke’s Bay Holt Planetarium. Scinde House, the on site boarding hostel, accommodates around 185 students and remains central to school identity and tradition.
Napier Boys’ is a member of the Super 8 group and maintains long standing sporting exchanges, including the Polson Banner fixture with Palmerston North Boys’ High School. The school has produced a wide range of prominent alumni in politics, business, the arts and elite sport. Its rugby, cricket, athletics and basketball programmes have carried national and international recognition, while academic ambition and character development remain core pillars of its modern approach.
