Millfield was founded in 1935 by Jack Meyer after he returned to England with seven Indian boys, including several princes, and began the school in the former Clark family mansion in Street, Somerset. From the start, Millfield was built on the idea of nurturing talent through exceptional facilities, coaching and opportunity. It was also one of the first independent schools to become co educational, admitting girls in 1939.
Over the next decades Millfield expanded rapidly, buying properties across the region, building purpose built boarding houses and developing a huge 240 acre campus. The school grew a reputation for combining strong academics with high performance sport, supported by a vast range of facilities including Olympic standard venues, an equestrian centre, golf courses and a 50 metre pool. Millfield Preparatory School later opened in Glastonbury, creating a full pathway from ages 2 to 18.
Today Millfield is the largest co educational boarding school in the UK with more than 1,300 pupils from around 75 countries. It is well known for producing elite athletes, Olympians and international sportspeople while also supporting strong academic pathways and scholarships. With its scale, global student body and specialist coaching programmes, Millfield stands as one of the most high profile and influential independent schools in Britain.
