Kingswood College is an independent Methodist co-educational school in Makhanda, Eastern Cape. Founded in 1894 as the Wesleyan Collegiate School for Boys, it was created to provide a boys’ education aligned with the traditions of the Wesleyan High School for Girls. The school evolved steadily through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, adopting the British public school model and expanding its facilities as enrolment increased. Kingswood remained a boys’ school until it began admitting girls in the early 1970s, becoming fully co-educational by 1975.
The school operates within the Methodist tradition and maintains long-standing links with other Methodist institutions in South Africa and abroad, including Kingswood School in Bath. Kingswood offers a full academic pathway from Grade 000 to Grade 12, with the National Senior Certificate written through the Independent Examinations Board. A post-matric bridging year is also offered. The academic structure focuses on steady progression, small class environments and a broad curriculum supported by specialist teaching spaces.
Kingswood’s campus occupies the eastern side of Makhanda and blends historic buildings with later additions. Several early campus structures were designed in the Queen Anne Revival style, characterised by red brick, gables and detailed woodwork. The Memorial Chapel, opened in 1962, remains a central feature of the school and commemorates former pupils who died in the world wars. The campus includes academic facilities, cultural spaces, sports fields and a music school housed in the historic Walton House.
Boarding is a significant part of school life, with six senior boarding houses and two junior houses. Many of the boarding buildings reflect the school’s long history, including School House, Wood House and Jacques House, each with a heritage linked to early headmasters, benefactors or founders. Junior boarding is provided through Hobson House and Van Vuuren Village, which serve younger pupils within a structured residential environment.
Co-curricular involvement is broad across sport, music, cultural activities and outdoor programmes. Kingswood competes regionally in rugby, cricket, hockey, tennis, athletics and other codes, and has produced numerous provincial, national and international sportspeople. Cultural life is supported through ensembles, clubs and service opportunities, with music forming a particularly established part of the school’s identity.
Today, Kingswood College presents itself as a heritage-rich, community-oriented and academically steady Methodist school. Its combination of co-educational structure, historic campus, boarding tradition and balanced co-curricular life places it among the notable independent schools in the Eastern Cape education landscape.
