King’s College, Taunton is an independent co-educational day and boarding school set on a spacious campus on the south side of Taunton, Somerset. Founded in 1880 by Canon Nathaniel Woodard, the school grew out of the Woodard Corporation’s commitment to establishing academically focused Anglican schools and has retained strong links to that heritage. The College occupies the former Taunton Grammar School buildings on South Road, a site whose distinctive Victorian design remains central to the school’s identity.
The school’s history includes notable architectural and cultural landmarks. The Chapel, developed between 1903 and 1936, is one of the most recognisable buildings on campus and reflects the influence of benefactors associated with the school’s early growth. The main building is listed for its historic value, and many original features continue to shape the environment in which pupils live and learn. The school’s connection to public life is longstanding, with King’s hosting figures such as Emperor Haile Selassie during his exile in the late 1930s and British political leaders during the mid-twentieth century.
Academically, King’s College offers a broad curriculum leading to GCSEs and A-levels, supported by dedicated subject centres for science, art, design technology and music. The school places strong emphasis on structured learning, pastoral support and a balanced co-educational environment. Boarding remains a major part of school life, with seven houses providing a stable and community-oriented setting for pupils from the UK and abroad. The Prep school at Pyrland Hall forms the junior pathway for pupils aged 2 to 13.
Sport and co-curricular activity are well established. The College competes across rugby, cricket, hockey, netball, swimming, athletics, tennis and a range of indoor sports, with several alumni progressing to professional and international level. Performing arts, choir, theatre, outdoor education and creative programmes form significant parts of the wider school experience, supported by specialist facilities that include theatres, swimming pools, astroturf pitches and a purpose-built art and music school.
King’s maintains a strong alumni community through the Old Aluredian network, linking past pupils with the wider life of the school. Today, King’s College, Taunton presents itself as a well-resourced, tradition-aware and academically focused independent school with a broad co-curricular offering and a distinctive pastoral and boarding culture.
