HTS Middelburg is a long-standing technical high school located in Middelburg, Mpumalanga. Established in 1927, the school grew from a small vocational training institution into one of the largest Afrikaans-medium technical schools in South Africa. Originally founded to serve the region’s industrial and engineering needs, the school expanded steadily through the mid-twentieth century and began admitting girls in 1982, opening its technical curriculum to a wider community.
The school today enrols around 1,500 learners from Grades 8 to 12 and remains rooted in a technical education model. Learners follow the full national curriculum alongside specialised practical and workshop-based subjects that prepare them for engineering pathways, trades, and further technical study. Instruction is offered in Afrikaans and supported by a staff complement that includes academic teachers and technical specialists. The school’s motto, Ons dien, reflects a long-established emphasis on discipline, practical skill and service.
Sport is a significant part of school life and draws broad participation. HTS Middelburg competes across rugby, cricket, netball, athletics, hockey, tennis, squash, golf, cross-country, mountain biking and additional codes such as skeet shooting and jukskei. The rugby programme is widely recognised, producing several provincial and national players, and maintaining strong competition within the Mpumalanga schools circuit. Facilities on campus support year-round training and competition for both boys and girls.
The school retains its identity as a technical institution with a strong community presence. Its workshops, academic blocks and boarding facilities form a sizeable urban campus that serves learners from Middelburg and surrounding areas. Alumni include prominent sportsmen and individuals in engineering and industry, reflecting the school’s practical orientation.
HTS Middelburg remains a major educational institution in the region, combining academic learning with technical pathways, active sport and a structured school culture.
