About Hamilton Boys

Hamilton Boys’ High School traces its roots back to 1911, when the original Hamilton High School was founded. In 1955 the school was formally split into separate boys’ and girls’ schools, with Hamilton Boys’ opening on its current Hamilton East site. Over the years it has grown into the largest boys’ secondary school in the Waikato region, known for strong academic expectations, a long standing house system and one of the most recognisable school identities in New Zealand.

The school offers both NCEA and Cambridge pathways, and draws more than two thousand day boys from across Hamilton, Cambridge, Te Awamutu and surrounding communities. Around 170 students board at Argyle House, the school’s on site hostel that has played a central role in HBHS life for generations. The campus combines traditional buildings with modern teaching spaces, specialist sports facilities and a wide range of co curricular opportunities that sit at the heart of school culture.

Hamilton Boys’ has built a major national sporting reputation, particularly in rugby, rowing and across the Super Eight competitions. The 1st XV has the strongest national record of any New Zealand school, while the rowing programme has claimed multiple Maadi Cups and Springbok Shields. The school has also produced a long list of All Blacks, Olympians and professional athletes across rugby, cricket, football, boxing and motorsport. Today Hamilton Boys’ continues to combine academic ambition with a high performance sporting environment that is respected across the country.
