About Hale School

Hale School is an independent Anglican day and boarding school for boys located in Wembley Downs, a western suburb of Perth. Established in 1858, it is one of the oldest boys’ schools in Western Australia and has grown from its early foundations in central Perth to a large modern campus that accommodates pupils from Year 1 to Year 12. The school moved several times in its first century before settling on its current site in 1961, where it now operates junior, middle and senior sections alongside extensive boarding facilities.

The campus covers close to 50 hectares and includes academic buildings, sporting grounds, boarder accommodation and specialist centres for music, drama, technology and outdoor education. The Forrest Library and the John Inverarity Music and Drama Centre form key parts of the academic and cultural environment, providing spaces for study, performance and school events. Junior and middle school facilities have been progressively developed to support collaborative learning and modern teaching methods.

Academically, the school follows the Western Australian Certificate of Education framework in the senior years and prepares pupils for ATAR pathways. Hale reports strong academic outcomes across a broad cohort and maintains a curriculum that balances core subjects with languages, technology, arts and outdoor programmes. Careers guidance and university preparation are built into the senior years, supported by a structured pastoral system.

Sport is a major element of school life. Hale is a member of the Public Schools Association and fields teams across cricket, rugby, football, rowing, swimming, athletics, hockey, tennis, basketball and a range of other sports. The school’s facilities include an aquatics centre with two pools, gymnasiums, cricket ovals, rugby and football fields, an aquaturf hockey ground, rowing facilities on the Swan River and multiple indoor training areas. Hale has produced many state and national representatives, particularly in cricket, rugby and swimming.

Co-curricular activity is broad, with options in music, drama, debating, service programmes, outdoor education, cadets and a variety of clubs. The school stages regular performances and concerts through its arts departments and supports individual and ensemble music study from junior levels onward. Leadership development and personal growth are central to the pastoral system, especially for boarders who form a significant part of the senior school population.

Alumni, known as Old Haleians, maintain close ties with the institution through events, networking and support for school initiatives. Former students have contributed across fields including sport, public life, business, the arts and national service.

Today, Hale School presents itself as a large, well-resourced boys’ school that blends long history with a contemporary academic and co-curricular programme. Its substantial campus, Anglican character and broad educational offering position it as a prominent institution within Western Australian schooling.
