Haileybury is an independent co-educational boarding and day school set on a large estate in Hertford Heath, Hertfordshire. The school was founded in 1862 on the former site of the East India College and retains the original Wilkins architecture around its central quadrangle, one of the largest of its kind in Britain. The modern school educates pupils from the ages of eleven to eighteen and draws a significant proportion of boarders from across the United Kingdom and overseas.
The campus covers more than 500 acres and includes the main academic buildings, boarding houses, playing fields, racquets courts and landscaped grounds. The setting remains a defining feature of the school, combining heritage buildings with newer facilities for science, sport, music and performing arts. Boarding takes place in a series of houses that serve both as residential accommodation and as pastoral units for boys and girls. Day pupils are integrated into the house system, which provides structure, social life and support throughout their senior school years.
Academically, Haileybury follows the English curriculum through the IGCSE programme and offers both A Levels and the International Baccalaureate in the sixth form. The school reports strong examination outcomes and was judged Excellent in all areas in its most recent Independent Schools Inspectorate review. Teaching is supported by a broad enrichment programme, dedicated careers and university guidance, and a wide range of co-curricular opportunities.
Co-curricular activity is central to the Haileybury experience. The school hosts the largest school-based Model United Nations conference in the United Kingdom, with delegations attending each year from across Europe, Asia and Africa. Music, drama and art have established profiles, supported by specialist studios, rehearsal spaces and a calendar of concerts and productions. Outdoor education, academic societies, service programmes and combined cadet activities offer additional breadth.
Sport is a major part of school life. Pupils compete in rugby, hockey, cricket, netball, football, athletics, racquets and a number of minor sports. The school’s grounds include extensive fields, indoor training areas and specialist facilities for racquets, a sport with historical roots at Haileybury.
Haileybury maintains links with partner schools overseas, including Haileybury Almaty and Haileybury Astana in Kazakhstan, which were founded with academic and structural guidance from the UK school. Alumni, known as Old Haileyburians, remain active in school life through events, mentoring and support for school initiatives.
Today, Haileybury presents itself as a large, traditional independent school that combines long-standing heritage with a modern academic and co-curricular programme. Its scale, facilities and international outlook shape a distinctive educational environment situated within easy distance of London.
