About Gordons School

Gordon’s School is a co-educational day and boarding school in West End, near Woking, with a heritage that stretches back to 1885. Established by public subscription at the wish of Queen Victoria as a national memorial to General Charles Gordon, the school has grown from its origins as the Gordon Boys’ Home into one of England’s best known state boarding schools. Its traditions, ceremonies and strong sense of identity reflect its unique founding story and long association with the reigning monarch, who remains the school’s patron.

The school moved to its current site in Surrey in 1887, developing a distinctive campus that blends historic architecture with modern facilities. The central buildings, including the Gothic Revival Assembly Hall and the Chapel of St Edward the Confessor, were designed by the noted architect William Butterfield. These buildings are set around a formal Parade Ground that continues to serve as the heart of school life. Over time the campus has expanded to include extensive playing fields, a wide range of boarding houses and a recently opened Sports Hub that provides indoor and outdoor facilities for students and the local community.

Gordon’s educates pupils from age eleven to eighteen and now accommodates close to one thousand students. A significant proportion board either weekly or full time, supported by residential houses that offer structure, continuity and a strong sense of belonging. The school follows the National Curriculum and places emphasis on academic progress, pastoral care and the development of well-rounded young people. Ofsted has recognised the school’s provision at the highest level, including the quality of its boarding.

The school maintains a vibrant programme of co-curricular activities. The Pipes and Drums Band, which dates back to the school’s earliest years, plays an important role in the ceremonial life of the school and performs both locally and internationally. Gordon’s is also active in Model United Nations, hosting its own conference and participating in events across the country. Sport forms a major part of daily life, supported by extensive grounds and specialist partnerships such as the school’s link with Harlequins Rugby Football Club. Creative arts are also well represented, with students taking part in musical productions, instrumental programmes and performances that contribute to a lively cultural environment.

Gordon’s benefits from the ongoing support of the Gordon Foundation, an independent charitable trust established shortly after the school’s foundation. The trust continues to assist students through bursaries and maintains the strong philanthropic spirit that has been part of the school’s identity for more than a century.

Former pupils of Gordon’s School have gone on to excel in a wide range of fields, including sport, the performing arts, public service and international competition. Their achievements reflect the values of commitment, service and aspiration that underpin the school’s ethos.

Today Gordon’s School presents itself as a dynamic and inclusive community that combines historic character with modern educational standards. Set within more than fifty acres of Surrey countryside, it continues to uphold its founding principles while providing pupils with the opportunities and support needed to thrive in academic, personal and co-curricular life.
