About Gonzaga

Gonzaga College SJ is a voluntary Catholic boys secondary school situated in Ranelagh in Dublin. Founded in 1950 by the Society of Jesus, the college forms part of the Jesuit educational tradition in Ireland and is known for its strong academic culture, broad curriculum and emphasis on character formation. The school is named after Saint Aloysius Gonzaga and its crest draws on the arms of the Gonzaga family, reflecting its Jesuit identity and heritage.

Set on spacious grounds a short distance from the city centre, Gonzaga College combines modern educational facilities with older period buildings that give the campus a distinctive character. The school includes a chapel, library, theatre, science block and extensive classroom spaces, as well as grounds that support cricket, rugby, tennis and other sports. A major redevelopment completed in 2009 significantly expanded the campus and enhanced its academic and co curricular facilities.

The college follows a traditional curriculum that places a strong emphasis on academic depth. Latin and Greek are encouraged in the Junior Cycle and students typically study eight subjects for the Leaving Certificate. Gonzaga has a consistent record of academic achievement and a high proportion of its students progress to further study at universities and colleges in Ireland and abroad. The arts are well supported in the life of the school, with visual arts, music and theatre featuring prominently throughout the year.

Sport is a central part of Gonzaga’s identity. Rugby is the primary school sport and the college fields teams at all age levels. The school has reached several Leinster Schools Senior Cup finals and won its first Senior Cup title in 2023. Gonzaga also competes in tennis, cricket, golf, athletics and other activities, and has produced players who have represented Ireland across multiple sports. Chess is another long standing strength of the college, with teams achieving national success and contributing to a well regarded chess club that continues beyond school level.

The campus environment supports a wider educational approach that aims to develop leadership, community responsibility and a balanced outlook. Students participate in a broad range of clubs, performances, competitions and house activities, contributing to a strong sense of belonging. The school’s pastoral structures reflect the Jesuit ethos of educating the whole person and encouraging personal growth alongside academic achievement.

Gonzaga College has produced many past pupils who have gone on to make significant contributions in fields such as education, the arts, law, public service, science and sport. Its alumni community remains closely connected to the college and plays an active role in supporting its ongoing development.

With its blend of Jesuit educational values, academic strength and vibrant co curricular life, Gonzaga College continues to hold a distinctive place within Irish education and remains committed to forming students who are well prepared for the opportunities and responsibilities of adult life.
