About Glenwood

Glenwood High School is a long-established public boys’ school in the suburb of Glenwood in Durban, serving the community since 1910. The school began as a small Day Continuation School with just twenty four boys and grew rapidly during its early years as Durban expanded. By 1915 it had moved into the Technical College building to accommodate increasing enrolment, and in 1928 it took its present name when the academic focus shifted from technical instruction to a broader secondary curriculum. The current campus, situated at the corner of Alan Paton and Bulwer Roads, was completed in the 1930s and remains the heart of the school today.

The school occupies a prominent position in Durban’s history of education. Its move to Glenwood allowed it to develop into a full secondary school with a strong academic framework and a growing co-curricular programme. Glenwood has maintained a close connection with its heritage and honours the contribution of former pupils who served during times of conflict, acknowledging the school’s sense of duty and community spirit.

Glenwood offers education from Grade 8 to Grade 12 and is home to around 1,300 boys. The school follows an English-medium curriculum and provides a structured academic pathway supported by a wide selection of subjects. Pastoral care is central to life at Glenwood, with boys placed in a supportive house system that builds identity, competition and continuity throughout their senior years.

Boarding is available through Gibson House, established in 1935 and located a short walk from the main campus. Originally designed for a small group of boarders, Gibson House has grown over time and continues to provide a stable and welcoming environment for boys who live on site. Its traditions and routines form an important part of the school’s character.

Glenwood has a strong sporting culture and a long tradition of achievement in rugby, cricket, hockey, water polo and many other disciplines. The school’s extensive programme also includes athletics, basketball, golf, swimming, target shooting and surfing, reflecting Durban’s coastal setting. Inter-house events, local fixtures and national touring opportunities give boys regular avenues for development. The school newspaper, the Sentinel, records these activities and contributes to a sense of shared school life.

Beyond sport, Glenwood supports a balanced co-curricular offering that includes music, cultural societies, leadership programmes and a growing interest in emerging fields such as eSports. These activities are closely integrated with academic life, helping boys to develop confidence and broader skills.

Many former pupils have distinguished themselves in sport, public life, engineering and the arts. Glenwood alumni include Springbok rugby players from across generations, international cricketers, tennis professionals, designers and business leaders. Their achievements continue to strengthen the school’s reputation and serve as an inspiration to current pupils.

Today Glenwood High School presents itself as a vibrant and purposeful boys’ school rooted in its community. Its commitment to academic progress, structured pastoral care and a broad co-curricular programme underpins its standing as one of Durban’s leading public schools.
