About George Heriots

George Heriot’s School is an independent day school in the centre of Edinburgh with roots that reach back to the early seventeenth century. It was founded through the bequest of George Heriot, royal goldsmith to King James VI and I, who left funds for the creation of a charitable institution supporting children in need. Construction began in 1628 and the school opened in 1659, eventually evolving from a hospital-style foundation into a modern educational community while preserving its original charitable purpose.

The school occupies one of the most distinctive architectural sites in Edinburgh. The main building is a sandstone quadrangle with turrets and decorative stonework, shaped by several master masons of the period. It was the first major building constructed outside the old city walls and remains closely linked to the historic fabric of the city. Over generations the campus has been carefully expanded with additional halls, teaching spaces and specialist facilities designed by prominent Scottish architects. The grounds include historic structures, landscaped courtyards and memorials to former pupils and staff.

Heriot’s educates children from Junior School through to Sixth Year, offering a wide curriculum within a single cohesive campus. The school’s long standing tradition of providing places for foundationers continues to this day through the George Heriot’s Trust. Pupils benefit from a strong academic programme alongside extensive opportunities in music, drama, outdoor pursuits and sport. The school’s Goldenacre grounds support rugby, cricket, rowing and other activities, while the arts and co-curricular programmes contribute to a lively cultural life.

Leadership across the centuries has been shaped by a long line of headmasters and, more recently, principals. Each era brought new developments, from the expansion of teaching provision in the nineteenth century to the transition to co-education in the late twentieth century. The school has maintained a consistent commitment to educational quality, pastoral care and service to its community.

Former pupils of George Heriot’s School have gone on to distinguished careers in science, academia, the arts, public life and international sport. Their achievements reflect the breadth of opportunity available to students and the strong educational foundations provided by the school.

Today the school stands as an established part of Edinburgh’s academic and architectural landscape. Its combination of historic character, modern facilities and long held charitable values continues to define its identity and guide its work with pupils and families across the city.
