About Epsom College

Epsom College is a long-established co-educational independent school situated on Epsom Downs in Surrey, educating pupils from the age of eleven to eighteen. Founded in 1853 as the Royal Medical Benevolent College, its original purpose was to provide education for the sons of medical professionals and to offer support to doctors and their families during times of hardship. Although the school’s charitable origins remain an important part of its identity, Epsom College has evolved over time into a modern public school with a broad intake and a wide range of academic and co-curricular opportunities.

The College occupies a distinguished campus marked by its striking Victorian architecture. The main buildings and the College Chapel are Grade II listed and form a prominent landmark overlooking Epsom Downs. Much of the estate reflects the Gothic revival style favoured in mid-nineteenth-century educational institutions, with a central tower, cloistered areas and landscaped lawns creating a traditional school setting. The chapel, completed in 1896 and later extended as a memorial to former pupils, continues to serve as a focal point for the school community.

Academically, Epsom College offers a wide curriculum supported by modern facilities, specialist teaching and a strong pastoral structure. The school has been fully co-educational since 1996 and operates a house system that provides pupils with a sense of identity, belonging and day-to-day pastoral care. Thirteen houses accommodate boarders and day pupils, each with its own history and traditions. Pupils in the lower school are also placed in dedicated houses that support their early years at the College.

Sport plays a major role in school life. Rugby is the principal boys’ sport in the Michaelmas term, with rugby sevens continuing into the Lent term. Football is played across all age groups, with increasing participation and competitive success. The College also has a distinguished history in target rifle shooting and is recognised as one of the most successful schools nationally in full-bore competition. A broad co-curricular programme complements these sports, ensuring that pupils can develop a range of interests beyond the classroom.

The College campus has continued to develop, including the establishment of Epsom College in Malaysia which opened in 2014. This sister school extends the ethos and academic approach of Epsom College to an international setting, offering a British-style education to day and boarding pupils.

Throughout its history, the College has maintained the values associated with its founding principles. It continues to celebrate its heritage while providing pupils with a modern, balanced and ambitious education. With a strong academic programme, a vibrant house system and a rich legacy in sport and culture, Epsom College remains one of Surrey’s notable independent schools.
