Dollar Academy is a co educational day and boarding school set on a seventy acre campus in the centre of Dollar, beneath the Ochil Hills. Founded in 1818 through the bequest of Captain John McNab, the school developed around the work of architect William Henry Playfair, whose classical building remains one of the most recognisable features of the campus. Over more than two centuries the school has expanded steadily, adding specialist facilities while preserving the landmark Playfair structure at the heart of the estate.
The campus combines historic character with modern academic and co curricular facilities. The Playfair Building was restored and rebuilt in the 1960s after a major fire, retaining its original external form while providing additional internal space. Surrounding areas now include science laboratories, arts studios, sports buildings and extensive green spaces. The school’s setting at the foot of the hills and its open layout contribute to a distinctive atmosphere that blends tradition with contemporary educational design.
Dollar Academy educates pupils from age five to eighteen and has an enrolment of around twelve hundred. The school offers a broad academic programme supported by pastoral structures and a long established house system. Boarding is integrated into campus life, with a significant proportion of pupils living on site. The school emphasises balanced development, combining academic progress with co curricular engagement and personal growth.
Sport and activities form a major part of daily life at the school. Pupils participate in a wide range of sports including rugby, hockey, athletics, cricket, football and individual disciplines. The school’s pipe bands are a well known feature of its identity and have achieved success in national and international competitions. Cultural opportunities are equally prominent, with music, drama, leadership programmes and outdoor education all contributing to a busy and varied calendar.
The school’s heritage is reflected in its traditions, publications and long established alumni community. Former pupils, known as Old Academicals, remain closely connected to the school and are active across many fields. Dollar Academy’s ethos centres on aspiration, service and opportunity, values that have shaped generations of pupils since its foundation.
Today the school presents itself as a forward looking educational community rooted in a strong historical foundation. Its large campus, broad curriculum and commitment to both academic and wider development make it one of Scotland’s most recognisable independent schools.
