About Cranleigh School

Cranleigh School is a coeducational independent boarding and day school in Surrey, founded in 1865 and located just north of the village of Cranleigh. It remains on its original campus, anchored by a distinctive Tudor Gothic quad designed by Henry Woodyer, along with a chapel and dining hall completed during the earliest years. These buildings are Grade II listed and form the architectural heart of the school.

The school was established with a clear aim to provide a strong Church of England education for the sons of farming families in Surrey. From an initial roll of eighteen boys on the first day, numbers grew steadily and by the 1890s Cranleigh was considered part of the established group of English public schools. The student body expanded again in the early twentieth century as new science facilities, land acquisitions and additional boarding accommodation strengthened the academic and pastoral offering.

Cranleigh has a long record of service during both world wars and its war memorials form an important part of school life. The school experienced further academic and cultural growth in the mid twentieth century with major improvements in music, drama, sport and boarding provision. Girls first joined the sixth form in 1971, and full coeducation followed in 1999.

Modern Cranleigh combines heritage with contemporary facilities. The campus includes the Devonport Speech Hall, the Connaught Building, the Emms Centre for science and languages, and the Van Hasselt Centre, which houses the library, classrooms and social spaces. The school operates eight houses, four for boys and four for girls, each with its own resident staff and community structure.

Sport is central to the Cranleigh experience, with rugby, cricket, hockey, swimming and fives all prominent. The Combined Cadet Force is one of the longest established in the sector and marks its origins from the formation of the school’s Officers’ Training Corps in 1900. Music and drama enjoy strong support through dedicated facilities and regular productions in the school’s theatres.

Cranleigh also operates international campuses in Abu Dhabi and China, expanding its educational model beyond the United Kingdom. With around 680 pupils aged 13 to 18, and a wider community including the prep school, Cranleigh continues to balance tradition, academic ambition, and a broad co curricular programme.
