Cowbridge Comprehensive
Education, inspiration and opportunities for life
Est. 1974
Cowbridge Comprehensive School is a coeducational secondary school in the Vale of Glamorgan, serving the town of Cowbridge and surrounding rural areas. The school traces its roots to the earlier Cowbridge Grammar School founded in 1608 and the Girls’ High School established in 1896. It became a comprehensive school in 1974 and has since grown into one of the largest secondary schools in the region, with a combined total of around fifteen hundred pupils across the secondary and sixth form years.
The campus sits on Aberthin Road on the north eastern edge of Cowbridge. The location provides a semi rural setting with space for academic buildings, social areas and extensive sports facilities. When the comprehensive school was first established, pupils were spread across three separate sites, with the lower, middle and sixth form centres housed in different buildings around the town. This arrangement continued until the major redevelopment programme of the late 2000s, which brought all year groups together on a single site.
A significant rebuilding project began in 2008, culminating in the opening of new facilities in September 2010. The development included a full reconstruction of the main building known as A Block, alongside the refurbishment of existing structures and the creation of modern sports amenities. The project cost an estimated twenty one and a half million pounds and allowed the school to centralise teaching, administration and student services. Public use of the sports facilities outside school hours was also incorporated into the design.
Cowbridge has continued to develop its facilities in the years since. Rising sixth form numbers prompted further expansion of the reception and post sixteen areas. In 2019, proposals were announced for the school to adopt an all through model for ages three to eighteen. Two new primary buildings were subsequently constructed on the site and opened in 2023, creating a unified educational environment with direct progression from early years into secondary and sixth form study.
The school offers a broad curriculum that includes GCSEs, A levels and the Welsh Baccalaureate. It maintains strong community links through local partnerships and the Cowbridge Comprehensive School Trust, whose responsibility was transferred in 2013 to the Sir Thomas Mansel Franklen Trust, a continuation of arrangements inherited from the grammar school era.
Today Cowbridge Comprehensive School presents itself as a large and modern centre of learning with a clear focus on academic achievement, pupil wellbeing and opportunities beyond the classroom. Its development over recent decades reflects a commitment to consolidating resources, improving facilities and meeting the needs of a growing community.
