About Brisbane Grammar

Brisbane Grammar School was founded in 1868 as Queensland’s first metropolitan grammar school and has played a central role in the educational development of Brisbane for more than 150 years. Established under the Grammar Schools Act, it opened its doors with fewer than one hundred students before quickly expanding to meet the demands of a growing colony. By the 1880s the school had relocated to its present site on Gregory Terrace, where its heritage buildings and elevated setting became defining features of the campus.

From its earliest years the school aimed to provide a rigorous academic education supported by broad cultural and co curricular opportunities. As enrolments grew, new facilities were added, including science laboratories, a dedicated boarding house and major academic buildings that helped shape the large contemporary campus. The development of a purpose built middle school in the early 2000s and the later addition of the Lilley Centre created a modern learning environment that supports students from Year 5 to Year 12.

Brisbane Grammar maintains a strong academic reputation across all disciplines. The school attracts boys from Brisbane, regional Queensland and overseas, offering a balanced curriculum delivered by experienced staff. A wide range of learning technologies, specialist teaching areas and well resourced libraries support academic progress, while pastoral systems emphasise wellbeing, responsibility and leadership.

Music, drama and the performing arts are important parts of school life. Multiple orchestras, bands, choirs and ensembles rehearse and perform throughout the year, and the school’s drama programme stages annual productions involving students from different year groups. Opportunities also exist in debating, enterprise education and a wide variety of special interest clubs, ensuring students can explore interests beyond the classroom.

Sport has long been one of Brisbane Grammar’s defining traditions. As a founding member of the Great Public Schools Association of Queensland, the school competes in rugby, cricket, rowing, football, swimming, tennis and numerous other sports. Training and fixtures are supported by extensive facilities, including the Indoor Sports Centre and the Northgate Playing Fields, which together provide access to courts, swimming pools, gyms and multiple playing surfaces.

Boarding remains an important part of the school’s identity, with students from across Australia and abroad living on campus in a structured and supportive environment. Outdoor education also plays a significant role, with the Moogerah Outdoor Education Centre offering programmes designed to develop teamwork, resilience and leadership.

Today Brisbane Grammar School is one of Australia’s leading independent boys schools, known for its blend of academic ambition, broad co curricular involvement and a long standing commitment to character development. Its heritage, facilities and community continue to shape a forward looking environment for students growing up in the heart of Brisbane.
