About Bradford Grammar School

Bradford Grammar School was founded in 1548 and later granted a Royal Charter by King Charles II, establishing it as one of the oldest academic institutions in Yorkshire. Originally a traditional grammar school serving the growing merchant city of Bradford, it moved to its current Frizinghall site in the late 1930s, where the new building was completed but immediately requisitioned during the Second World War. The school returned after the war and developed into a modern independent day school known for strong academic expectations, selective entry and a clear ethos shaped by its Latin motto Hoc Age (Do this).

Today BGS offers education from ages 4 to 18 and is recognised for its combination of academic breadth, co-educational environment and high university progression rates. Sport and co-curricular life play a major role, with rowing, rugby, athletics and a wide cultural programme enriching school life. Alumni include internationally recognised figures in science, politics, the arts and sport, reflecting the school’s long tradition of producing accomplished and outward-looking graduates. Bradford Grammar School remains a leading independent school in the region, balancing heritage with a forward-thinking approach to learning.
