About Blackrock College

Blackrock College was founded in 1860 by French missionary Jules Leman of the Holy Ghost Fathers. The school was created to provide a strong Catholic education for Irish boys while also training missionaries for service abroad. Located in Williamstown, just outside Dublin, the campus sits on 56 acres of parkland and has grown into one of Ireland’s most prominent boys schools, combining day and boarding students within a historic setting that includes Williamstown Castle and several long standing academic buildings.

Over the decades Blackrock developed a broad academic programme supported by strong arts, debating, music and cultural traditions. It also became known for its charitable and social outreach through partnerships with GOAL, Aidlink, St Vincent de Paul and the Willow Wheelers humanitarian projects. The school maintains a large transition year radio station, annual musicals, choirs and orchestras, and a well established pastoral system built around its six student houses, each named after key historical figures in the college’s story.

Blackrock is best known internationally for rugby, holding more Leinster Senior Cups than all other schools combined and producing generations of Irish internationals and British and Irish Lions. The sporting programme also includes swimming, athletics, cricket, tennis, basketball, rowing and Gaelic games. With around 1,000 students, a major boarding operation and a strong academic reputation, Blackrock remains one of Ireland’s leading Catholic secondary schools and one of the most influential Spiritan institutions in the country.
