About Bishops

Diocesan College, known across South Africa as Bishops, was founded in 1849 by Bishop Robert Gray and is one of the country’s oldest and most prestigious boys’ schools. Set in Rondebosch beneath Table Mountain, the campus grew alongside the Anglican Church’s early institutions and adopted the British public school model that shaped its culture, academics and boarding life. The school’s motto, Pro Fide Et Patria, reflects its historic grounding in faith, scholarship and service.

Bishops operates as a three-school structure from pre-prep to college and is recognised nationwide for high academic achievement. The school has long produced leading scholars, scientists and public figures, and is one of only four schools worldwide historically linked to an annual Rhodes Scholarship. Its campus includes heritage buildings, the Ubuntu Learning Centre, strong music and arts facilities and a modern academic programme that includes both the NSC and Cambridge AS/A Level pathways.

Sport is central to school life and Bishops is a major force in Western Cape school sport, especially in rugby, hockey, rowing, cricket and water polo. Many Old Diocesans have represented South Africa in rugby and cricket, while others have excelled internationally in business, science and public leadership. The school’s deep traditions, large global alumni network and competitive rivalries with Paarl Boys, Paul Roos, Rondebosch and SACS have helped cement its identity as one of South Africa’s flagship independent schools.
