About Belvedere

Belvedere College SJ, founded in 1832, is one of Ireland’s oldest and most influential Jesuit schools. It began as St Francis Xavier’s College before moving into Belvedere House in 1841, giving the school its name and anchoring it in the north inner city of Dublin. The college grew alongside the community around Hardwicke Street and Great Denmark Street, developing a reputation for academic ambition, character formation and a strong Jesuit identity built on service and leadership.

Over time the school expanded from classical education to a broad modern curriculum while keeping its traditions alive. Belvedere’s cultural footprint is substantial, with deep links to Irish literature, national history and the arts. Its campus includes specialist learning centres, a theatre, extensive sports facilities and a museum documenting almost two centuries of school life. Charitable work also plays a major role in school culture, most famously the annual Christmas Sleep-Out which has become a national fundraiser.

Today Belvedere College is known for its academic results, vibrant performing arts, and a powerful sporting profile, particularly in rugby, athletics and cricket. Its alumni network spans national leaders, writers, Olympians, business figures and artists. The school continues to position itself as a modern Jesuit institution committed to educating boys to become confident, socially engaged and community-minded young men.
