Auckland Grammar School was founded in 1869 and is one of New Zealand’s most historic boys’ schools. It began in central Auckland before moving to its landmark Mountain Road campus in 1916, where the Spanish Mission style main block and war memorial remain defining features. The school has grown into one of the largest secondary schools in the country and carries a long academic tradition under the motto Per Angusta ad Augusta, meaning through difficulties to greatness.
Grammar has always combined academic rigour with a distinct culture of discipline, formality and high expectations. The school offers both the New Zealand curriculum and its own pathways based on Cambridge qualifications, supported by strong results and a deep alumni network. Its heritage buildings, extensive sports fields and VentureLodge campus at Ohakune form part of a wide educational environment shaped over more than a century and a half.
The school is nationally recognised for its sporting pedigree, particularly in rugby, producing more All Blacks than any other school in New Zealand and a long list of professional cricketers, Olympic athletes and world-class performers. Alumni also include leading academics, scientists, public figures, artists and business leaders. Today Auckland Grammar remains a benchmark institution in New Zealand education, known for its scale, tradition and consistent pursuit of excellence.
