About Abingdon School

Abingdon School is one of England’s oldest independent schools, with roots that trace back to the medieval period and the earliest surviving reference dating from 1256. The school has spent centuries evolving from its early monastic origins into a large, modern day and boarding school with a strong academic reputation. Located in Abingdon-on-Thames, the campus combines historic buildings with significant recent developments, creating a blend of tradition and contemporary facilities.

The school has expanded heavily over the last few decades with new science buildings, a major sports centre, the Amey Theatre, Beech Court for the Sixth Form and a dedicated economics and computer science hub. Boarding has also undergone major upgrades with expanded houses and new social spaces, reflecting the school’s investment in student life. In 2024 Abingdon announced a full move to co-education, beginning with the prep school in 2024 and the senior school from 2026.

Abingdon is known for strong academics, a broad extracurricular programme and outstanding sport. Rowing, rugby, football and cricket are central parts of school life, supported by extensive facilities at the main campus and Tilsley Park. The school’s “Other Half” programme offers more than 130 activities, from debating and film to music, theatre and the Combined Cadet Force. Abingdon has produced notable alumni across many fields and remains one of the leading independent schools in the UK.
