Wellington Premiership
The Wellington Schools Premiership is the premier secondary school rugby competition in the capital region of New Zealand. Administered by the Wellington Rugby Football Union, it features the leading First XV teams from the city and surrounding districts, including long-standing rugby schools such as Wellington College, Scots College, St Patrick’s College (Silverstream and Town), Rongotai College, and St Bernard’s College.
The competition runs through a round-robin format followed by semi-finals and a grand final, with the winner advancing to represent the Hurricanes region in the National Top 4 playoffs. Known for its balance of physicality and flair, the Wellington Premiership has a reputation for producing creative, fast-paced rugby and remains one of the country’s most watched and competitive schoolboy leagues.
The intensity of rivalries such as Wellington College vs St Patrick’s Silverstream has helped make the Premiership a key event on the New Zealand schools rugby calendar, often drawing large crowds and national attention.
