St Stithians Easter Festival

The St Stithians Easter Festival is where the South African school sports festival was born. First staged as a rugby festival in 1984, the oldest event of its kind in the country, it has grown across four decades into the Saints Sports Festival, a vast Easter gathering on the Randburg campus that now draws more than seventy thousand visitors across two weekends, with the rugby still beating at its heart over the Easter weekend itself.

The rugby programme carries the festival's founding spirit. Sides travel from across South Africa and well beyond its borders, with Zimbabwe's St John's Harare, Namibia's Windhoek schools and touring teams from England regular guests alongside the local traditions, and the fixture list deliberately mixes the famous names with rising schools given their chance on a big stage. Around the first XV action the campus hums with hockey, netball, football, squash and tennis, prep schools playing their own festival the weekend before, and the Alumni Games returning Old Stithians to the fields they once defended.

Four decades on, the festival that started it all remains the measure of what a school sports festival can be: a whole community's celebration, with schoolboy rugby at Easter as its founding tradition and enduring centrepiece.
