Independent Schools Rugby Festival

The Independent Schools Rugby Festival is the winter gathering of South Africa's independent schools, a rotating celebration that brings the ISASA family together from every corner of the country. Hosting duties pass between the great independents, from St Alban's in Pretoria to Woodridge on the Eastern Cape coast, Bishops in Cape Town and St Andrew's in Bloemfontein, with each edition drawing sides from KwaZulu-Natal's Midlands, Johannesburg's northern suburbs, the Lowveld and beyond.

The festival exists to solve a problem of geography. Independent schools are scattered across the republic, and the festival gives their boys the chance to test themselves against counterparts from other regions they would rarely otherwise meet: St John's against Kearsney, St Stithians against Hilton, Uplands against Woodridge, with development teams regularly included as a deliberate act of upliftment. Since its formal inception in 2012 the ethos has never wavered: participation, camaraderie and sportsmanship first, with visiting teams billeted in the host school's boarding houses in the old tradition, so that the festival builds friendships as deliberately as it builds rugby.

Played over the winter holidays across several match days, the festival has become the independent sector's proudest shared occasion, a reminder that some of the country's finest rugby lives beyond the traditional government school giants.
