Grey High Rugby Festival

The Grey High Rugby Festival is the Eastern Cape's flagship gathering of schoolboy rugby, hosted by Grey High School in Gqeberha and now standing proud through three decades in a calendar crowded with newer rivals. Each autumn more than two thousand players, coaches and officials descend on the city as sides from across South Africa spread across the school's famous grounds, headlined by Kolisi Field, named in honour of the school's most celebrated old boy, Springbok World Cup winning captain Siya Kolisi.

The festival is a genuine national crossroads. KwaZulu-Natal's powerhouses travel down in numbers, Cape schools like SACS and Rondebosch make the journey east, and the Eastern Cape's own tribe, Selborne, Queen's, Graeme, Kingswood and Framesby, renew ancient rivalries in front of packed banks. Beyond the headline first-team fixtures on Kolisi Field and the Pollock Oval, the programme runs deep through the age groups and second XVs, spilling onto Crusaders and Old Grey, while the Hibbert Shield hockey tournament runs simultaneously on the Rectory astro to turn the whole campus into a festival of school sport.

For the hosts it is momentum built at home after the Easter tours; for the visitors it is a benchmark against one of the great rugby schools of the republic; and for Gqeberha it is the weekend the city's proudest sporting tradition takes centre stage.
