The Central North Island Rugby Competition (CNI) is one of New Zealand’s most respected inter-school rugby tournaments, bringing together leading secondary schools from the heart of the North Island. Established in 2012, the competition was created to provide a high-performance platform for schools outside the major city unions, ensuring strong, balanced competition across provincial boundaries.
The CNI features powerhouse rugby schools such as St Paul’s Collegiate (Hamilton), Wesley College, St Peter’s Cambridge, Feilding High School, Wanganui Collegiate, Lindisfarne College, Rathkeale College, and others. The teams compete in a round-robin format through the winter season, followed by semi-finals and a grand final that crowns the regional champion.
Renowned for its balanced mix of traditional and emerging rugby schools, the CNI has produced numerous players who’ve gone on to provincial, Super Rugby, and national honours. The competition’s spirit lies in its emphasis on tradition, respect, and development, maintaining classic schoolboy rivalries while serving as a crucial step in New Zealand’s player pathway.
