Newington College is one of Sydney’s most recognised independent schools, with a history dating back to 1863 and a long association with the AAGPS. Based at Stanmore with additional preparatory campuses at Lindfield and Wyvern House, the College enrols more than 2,000 students and maintains a busy academic, cultural and sporting environment. From 2026, Newington will begin a staged transition to full co-education.
The school offers a wide academic programme that includes the NSW Higher School Certificate, the International Baccalaureate Diploma and Cambridge IGCSE. Teaching is supported by modern learning spaces, specialist centres for science, arts, technology and sport, and a strong emphasis on structured academic progression across all year levels. The boarding community is housed at Edmund Webb House, giving the school a metropolitan base with a rural and international reach.
Newington is a founding member of the AAGPS and sport remains a core part of College identity. The school competes in all GPS codes and has produced national and international athletes across rugby, rowing, athletics, basketball and numerous other sports. The rugby programme has a long heritage, with deep rivalries across the GPS competition and notable Old Boys who have gone on to professional and international rugby careers. Rowing is another historic strength, supported by the Robert Glasson Boatshed at Abbotsford, which has produced multiple Olympians and world-level crews.
Campus life is shaped by a broad co-curricular offering that includes cadets, music, drama, outdoor education and the long-running Newington Challenge programme. The house system is well established and plays a central role in student culture, while the school’s heritage buildings, war memorials and archives highlight a long institutional continuity.
Today, Newington presents itself as a large, academically ambitious and historically grounded school with significant sporting depth and a clear commitment to broad student development. Its combination of academic choice, extensive facilities and a strong GPS presence makes it one of the most prominent independent schools in New South Wales.
