Haberdashers’ Monmouth School is a co educational independent boarding and day school in Monmouth, Wales, educating pupils from age three to eighteen. The school was formed in 2024 through the merger of Monmouth School for Boys and Haberdashers’ Monmouth School for Girls, bringing the long separate traditions of the two historic institutions into a unified co educational structure while continuing their shared educational heritage under the Haberdashers’ foundation.
The creation of the school followed a consultation process that began in 2022, aimed at establishing a single co educational model across the town’s Haberdashers’ schools. The combined school was formally opened in October 2024 in a ceremony attended by the Duke of Edinburgh. The campus continues to operate across the long established Monmouth sites, with boarding, day provision and a full academic programme that spans early years through to sixth form.
The school has continued to develop its co curricular and creative programmes following the merger. In 2024 the fashion designer Jimmy Choo visited the school to lead design workshops and subsequently became the school’s Patron of Fashion, Design and Textiles. In early 2025 the Haberdashers’ Company confirmed the appointment of Melvyn Roffe as head, taking up post in August 2025.
Haberdashers’ Monmouth School maintains the long running traditions of the former boys’ and girls’ schools, including their academic curriculum, pastoral systems, boarding structure, and extensive involvement in sport, music and the arts. The school continues its association with the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers, and its heritage traces directly back to the foundation established by William Jones in the early seventeenth century.
Headteachers since the formation of the co educational school include Simon Dorman, who oversaw the transition period, and Melvyn Roffe, appointed from 2025.
The school remains one of Wales’ notable independent institutions, combining historic foundations with a modern co educational approach, and continues to operate under the name Haberdashers’ Monmouth School.
