About Kelston

Kelston Boys’ High School is a state boys’ secondary school in West Auckland, established in 1963 following the split of the former co-educational Kelston High School. The separation created dedicated boys’ and girls’ campuses, with the boys’ school moving to the current Archibald Road site. Since then, Kelston Boys has developed into a significant institution within the Auckland region, serving a diverse community and maintaining a strong presence in both academics and sport.

The school offers a broad academic programme that includes bilingual pathways in Māori, Samoan and Tongan, reflecting the cultural profile of its student body. Teaching focuses on structured progression from Year 9 to Year 13, supported by specialist staff and targeted initiatives for literacy, numeracy and senior qualification achievement. The school’s Equity Index places it within communities facing socioeconomic barriers, and this influences a clear emphasis on support systems and pastoral care.

Sport is a defining feature of Kelston Boys, particularly rugby. The school is one of the most successful rugby institutions in New Zealand, having won the National Top 4 title five times and the Condor Sevens tournament five times. Kelston teams consistently compete in the top Auckland schoolboy divisions and have produced numerous All Blacks, international players and professional athletes across both rugby union and rugby league. Former principals and staff have also been prominent figures in the New Zealand rugby landscape, including Graham Henry and Brian Evans.

Beyond rugby, the school maintains active participation in a wide range of sports such as basketball, football, cricket, softball, volleyball, weightlifting and wrestling. Co-curricular activities in performing arts, dance and cultural groups are well established, with the school gaining national recognition in hip hop through the Sweet and Sour Dance Crew.

Leadership continuity is a hallmark of the school’s recent history. Adeline Blair, appointed in 2018, is the first woman to lead a state boys’ school in Auckland and has been part of the Kelston community since the 1990s. Her tenure continues a long succession of principals who have shaped the school’s culture of resilience, discipline and service.

Today, Kelston Boys’ High School presents itself as a culturally grounded, community-focused boys’ school with a strong sporting identity and an academic structure designed to support learners toward senior qualification success. Its legacy in New Zealand rugby and its role within West Auckland’s educational landscape make it a recognised and influential institution.
