About John McGlashan

John McGlashan College is a state-integrated day and boarding school for boys located in Maori Hill, Dunedin. The school was founded in 1918 after the McGlashan family gifted their home and estate on the condition that a Presbyterian boys’ school be established on the site. The college served for many decades as an independent Presbyterian institution before integrating into the state system in 1989, retaining its special character and boarding traditions.

The campus sits on Pilkington Street and combines heritage buildings with modern academic and recreational facilities. Classrooms, specialist teaching spaces and boarding houses overlook the surrounding Balmacewen area, while the college’s proximity to the Balmacewen Golf Course provides additional recreational access. Boarding is centred in two houses, with Ross House accommodating younger boarders and Balmacewen House supporting senior students in year eleven to thirteen.

Academically, John McGlashan College offers the full national curriculum from year seven to thirteen. Senior students may pursue either the NCEA pathway or the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, which the school has offered since 1999. The academic environment emphasises structured learning, consistent expectations and targeted preparation for tertiary study. Exchange links with partner schools in Japan, France and Germany extend language learning and international exposure.

Sport plays a major role in college life. Boys participate across rugby, football, cricket, hockey, basketball, tennis, volleyball, rowing, golf, skiing and other codes. The school’s 1st XV rugby programme maintains a competitive profile within the Otago region and has benefitted from an annual exchange with Whitgift School in England. Access to nearby facilities and strong community participation underpin wide involvement across all levels.

The college operates a four-house system that supports pastoral care and inter-house competition. Balmacewen, Burns, Gilray and Ross compete annually across athletics, cross country, haka, swimming and a range of minor sports. These events form a central part of the school’s culture and encourage wide participation.

Today, John McGlashan College presents itself as a balanced academic and boarding environment with a strong sense of heritage and community. Its combination of state integration, IB provision, active sporting life and structured pastoral support positions it as a leading boys’ school in Dunedin and the wider Otago region.
