About Coleg Y Cymoedd

Coleg y Cymoedd is a further education institution serving communities across Rhondda Cynon Taf and Caerphilly. Formed in 2013 through the merger of Coleg Morgannwg and Ystrad Mynach College, it now operates across four main campuses in Aberdare, Nantgarw, Rhondda and Ystrad Mynach. The college teaches around ten thousand learners each year and offers a broad mix of academic, vocational and work-based courses.

The curriculum covers GCSEs, A levels, BTECs, NVQs, access programmes, apprenticeships, foundation degrees and a range of higher education pathways delivered in partnership with Cardiff Metropolitan University, the University of South Wales and other regional providers. Courses span art and design, engineering, construction, childcare, public services, hospitality, motor vehicle, hair and beauty, sport, health and social care, computing and business, along with dedicated provision for ESOL and adult learners.

Coleg y Cymoedd has undergone substantial development work over the past decade. The Nantgarw Campus, opened in 2012, marked one of the largest single investments in further education in Wales and has become a central hub for engineering, technology and academic study. The Aberdare Campus followed in 2017, replacing an older facility and creating a modern town-centre site with new teaching spaces, specialist areas and improved access for the local community. Additional projects include a motor vehicle training centre at Ystrad Mynach, a railway apprenticeship facility at Nantgarw and a purpose-built Centre of Sporting Excellence that opened on the same campus.

Across all sites, the college has invested heavily in industry-standard equipment and practical learning environments designed to support progression into employment or further study. Teaching is delivered by specialist staff and supported by strong links with employers across the valleys. The college continues to develop its estates and provision to meet regional demand and support learners at different stages of their education.

Coleg y Cymoedd’s former students include figures from broadcasting, sport and technical fields, reflecting the range of pathways available. The college presents itself as a modern and inclusive further education provider that serves its communities through accessible courses, updated facilities and strong partnerships.
