The Auckland 1A Rugby Competition is New Zealand’s premier secondary school rugby league, widely regarded as one of the toughest and most talent-rich school tournaments in the world. First played in the late 19th century, it features Auckland’s leading rugby schools competing through a round-robin season followed by semi-finals and a grand final, traditionally staged at Eden Park.
The competition is steeped in tradition, with powerhouse programmes such as Auckland Grammar School, St Kentigern College, Kelston Boys’ High School, Sacred Heart College, and Mount Albert Grammar School producing countless provincial and international players. Fierce rivalries and huge crowds have helped turn 1A rugby into a cultural institution across Auckland.
Renowned for its physicality, skill level, and professional pathways, the Auckland 1A Competition remains the gold standard for schoolboy rugby, serving as a direct stepping stone to Super Rugby and All Blacks honours.
