About Dame Allan’s School
Founded in 1705, Dame Allan’s School is one of Newcastle upon Tyne’s most historic independent schools, combining more than three centuries of tradition with a modern and ambitious approach to education. Based in Fenham, in the west of Newcastle, the school educates approximately 1,250 pupils across its Junior School, Senior School and Sixth Form.
The school was established through the generosity of Dame Eleanor Allan, whose original vision was to provide an education for young people from the local community. Over the centuries, Dame Allan’s has grown and evolved considerably, eventually moving to its present Fenham site in 1935 while retaining the strong sense of identity and heritage that has defined the school since its foundation.
Today, Dame Allan’s offers a broad education designed to encourage pupils to succeed both academically and beyond the classroom. Strong examination results sit alongside extensive opportunities in sport, music, drama, the arts and other co-curricular activities. The school’s sporting programme forms an important part of school life, providing pupils with opportunities to represent Dame Allan’s across a range of disciplines while developing teamwork, resilience and a lifelong enjoyment of sport. The school has also continued to expand its sporting offering, including the establishment of Dame Allan’s Boat Club in partnership with Tyne United Rowing Club.
Its facilities reflect that combination of heritage and continued investment. Recent developments include the £8 million Jubilee Building, incorporating science laboratories, design technology, art and modern teaching spaces, alongside the refurbished Queen’s Building for Sixth Form pupils.
Academically, Dame Allan’s has established a strong record of achievement. In 2025, 78.3% of A-level examinations were graded A*–B, while more than 60% of GCSE examinations achieved grades 9–7.
With its distinctive history, strong academic reputation and commitment to opportunities beyond the classroom, Dame Allan’s continues to play a prominent role in education in Newcastle and the wider North East.
